Emergency Engine Start Procedure for Acura and Honda

A non transponder key with the correct mechanical cuts that will work the ignition lock cylinder will be need. You can get them at your local locksmith for a very low price if you ask them to duplicated your transponder key into a regular one(mechanical key).

Acura

Models: CL, TL, INTEGRA & MDX (Use the Brake Pedal)
Models: 3.5 RL, NSX, RSX & TSX (Use the Hand Brake)

Honda

Models: Accord, CR-V, Insight, Odyssey and S2000 (Use the Brake Pedal)
Models: Civic and Prelude (Use the Hand Brake)

  • You will need a mechanical key that work the ignition lock cylinder.
  • Get the "Immobilizer Brake Code" from the Honda Acura dealer; you would have to go to the dealer and show them proof of ownership of the vehicle, thus to very strict policy they will not give any information over the phone. The "Immobilizer Brake Code" is a five digit number. Each car has a different "Immobilizer Brake Code" since they are V.I.N(Vehicle Identification Number) specific.
  • Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (II).
  • Have the BRAKE CODE in front of you. To enter the first number of the BRAKE CODE, press and release the brake the same number of times as the first number in the BRAKE CODE. For example if the first number in the BRAKE CODE is a 2, press and release the brake 2 times.
  • Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
  • Within 30 seconds, turn the ignition switch to the ON position (II). For example if the 2nd number in the BRAKE CODE is a 3, press and release the brake 3 times.
  • Continue entering the BRAKE CODE as described above for the rest 3rd, 4th and 5th digits.
After entering the 5th number, the immobilizer indicator light on the dash should flash 5 times and then shut off. The car should now start. This procedure must be repeated each time you turn off the car for more than 10 minutes. The Immobilizer System indicator will remain on while the engine is running.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you find your keys or drive home to get them, they cannot be use until the vehicle has been turned off for more than 10 minutes.

  1. Great write up. Unfortunately the Acura dealers in my area aren't privy to this process. I have called all three trying to get the code. I have offered to bring the registration, photo ID, and have the bank fax a copy of the title. They still either have no clue what I'm talking about or they say they can't give it to me without the car being at the dealership. Am I not explaining what I need correctly or are they just trying to get more money from me in diagnostics. I'm just trying to save on a tow. Thanks.

  4. I tried this but at the end I had three Green Key Bleak so I'm not sure what that means or if it's because my car is an 01 Civic it does 3 instead of 5 blinks but it still would not start after those attempts..?? Any suggestions or diagnosis? Thanks

  5. I called 3 local dealers and none of them claimed to have any knowledge of this procedure. However, the last dealer I called said he would give me the 5 digit "radio" unlock code if I would give him my serial number. I tried this procedure on my 2005 Honda Accord with the code he gave me and it did not work. Is the "radio" code the same code used on the immobilizer?

  6. UPDATE: Have your dealer reference Honda Service Bulletin 02-053 dated October 19, 2016. Page twelve of this 18 page document gives the dealer instructions about getting and using the code. BEWARE: My local dealer gave me the code but, warned me that it will only work once. If you shut off the car for more than 10 minutes, you won't be able to start it again until you get another code from the dealer. In my case, it appears that there is something else wrong with the car that the dealer can't even figure out without randomly switching out electrical parts. The main circuit breaker that everyone references was deleted on Honda Accords from 2005 forward.

  7. Ok just called my Acura dealership in Tampa Florida and they had no idea what I was talking about but I was persistant and after 2 hours a guy in the parts dept asked your looking for a code? I said yes, he said that is in the Service computer and in there is a tab called Immobilizer codes and in there it will ask you which Immobilizer code you need and haven them choose Immobilizer Break Code and then they enter the VIN and bam he gave me my code to start my car. It worked.
